Emergency Information
What to do in an Emergency
If something seems wrong, don't wait! Call 9-1-1. Calling earlier allows for faster treatment and improved recovery.
Do NOT attempt to move the patient unless it is necessary.
When you call, identify yourself to the dispatcher with clear description of the location and the phone number you are calling from.
Explain the nature of the emergency. How many patients are there? Is the patient conscious? Is the patient breathing? Bleeding? What caused the injury?
Remain calm, and, if possible, someone should stay with the patient. Talk to and reassure the patient that help is on the way.
If available, have someone meet the ambulance at the street.
Pre-Emergency Tips
Make a list of all of your medications, allergies, and medical history in an easily accessible location. A "File of Life" is a convenient way to make the information easily accessible. (See FAQs).
Ensure that your house number is in a visible and clear place.
Have a personal ID handy at all times.
Try to map out a route in your house to make sure a stretcher would be able to get through.
